What is the Cost to paint my Kitchen Cabinets?
December 18, 2018Painting your Bulkhead, the Do’s and Dont’s’:
One of the often neglected or looked over parts of your exterior of your home is the Bulkhead.
The Bulkhead weathers the storm through rain, ice, snow, heat and cold due to cold temperatures in the morning to blazing heat in the height of the day. The temperature fluctuations require the correct preparation and coatings to be applied or almost instant failure will occur.
The weather along with the closeness to the ground and without maintenance eventually brings on rust and metal rot.
These steps will prolong the life of the Bulkhead and keep it looking presentable for years: If you Bulkhead is showing age or rust follow these steps for maintenance:
Maintenance Steps:
- Wash with medium bristle brush and cleaner to rid the Bulkhead of dirt and mold.
- light sand all metal with medium grit sandpaper and if rust is visible a coarser sandpaper will have to be used to remove rust to clean metal
- If rot is found it may be repaired with metal reinforced filler by Bondo https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-us/all-3m-products/~/Bondo-Metal-Reinforced-Filler/?N=5002385+3293191703&rt=rud.
- prime all raw metal areas with Benjamin Moore Direct To Metal (DTM) primer, a quart will usually be enough.
- apply two coats of finish coats with light sanding in between using a Benjamin Moore quality finish paint for exteriors with a sheen of soft gloss or low luster. A sheen will allow it to be cleaned occasionally.
The Bulkhead restoration is an task that can be completed on a weekend with basic tools: the tools are as follows:
- sandpaper, medium and course grit
- cleaning solution and medium bristle brush
- DTM primer
- quality exterior finish paint, we recommend a sheen that is easily washable
- Metal bondo if needed
- paint brush
